Australia’s International Law Obligations

Our panel of International Law experts will discuss:
* International Law 101: how it works and why it matters
* Australia's leadership, failures, and missed opportunities in relation to the international arms trade
* The connection between human rights and democratic participation
* The relationship between international humanitarian law and human rights law
* The importance of regional human rights systems and what Australia could learn from them
Dr Juliette McIntyre is a Senior Lecturer in Law at Adelaide University and a recognised specialist in international courts and tribunals. Her research has been cited in multiple written and oral submissions before the International Court of Justice. Dr McIntyre has become a prominent public voice for international law, with over 350 appearances across global outlets including the BBC, CNN, ABC, Al Jazeera and Reuters and is a co-host of the popular Called to the Bar international law podcast.
Dr Stacey Henderson is an Associate Professor in Law at Flinders University. Her research focuses on the protective capacity of international law, including in the context of disarmament and arms control, international humanitarian law, international peace and security, and the responsibility to protect civilians from atrocity crimes.
Dr Sarah Moulds is an Associate Professor in Law at Adelaide University and co-founder of the Rights Resource Network SA. In 2022 Dr Moulds was awarded a Churchill Fellowship to explore how to empower young people to engage effectively with Australian parliaments. She is currently the Editor of the Australasian Parliamentary Review, the Deputy Chair of the International Parliamentary Engagement Network and the South Australian representative on the Law Council of Australia’s National Human Rights Committee.
Dr So Yeon Kim is a Lecturer in Law at Adelaide University. Her research focuses on public international law, with particular emphasis on the law of the sea, international environmental law, third-world approaches to international law and international relations. Dr Kim has also advised states on a range of international legal issues, including territorial and maritime disputes, climate change, the law of treaties, and the law of the sea.
Dr Ayla do Vale Alves is a Lecturer in Law at Adelaide University. Her research interests include international law, human rights, cultural heritage, Indigenous rights, regional human rights systems, freedom of religion and rights of the family, and Latin American legal studies. Ayla also worked as a Judicial Clerk trainee at the European Court of Human Rights.
